#6 Open vs. Closed
The Science of Sterile Care: Why We Choose the Closed System
When considering colon hydrotherapy, the most frequent technical question we receive is the difference between an "Open System" and a "Closed System." At ColonCARE Mauritius, our choice of a professional Closed System is a deliberate clinical decision rooted in hygiene, modesty, and the ability to provide a truly nurse-led experience.

What is a "Closed System"?
In a closed system, the entire procedure is contained within a sterile, pressurised circuit. Water is introduced at a very low, regulated pressure, and waste is removed through a separate outflow tube. Because the system is "closed" to the air, the treatment is completely odourless, and the client remains covered and comfortable throughout.
Clinical Control vs. Passive Release
While "open" systems require the client to push and release waste themselves (often into an open basin), the closed system allows Virginia to stay by your side. This allows for:
Abdominal Massage: Manual techniques to help stimulate the colon's natural peristalsis.
Temperature Modulation: Switching between slightly warm and cool water to "exercise" the bowel wall.
Immediate Feedback: As your nurse, Virginia can monitor the waste flow in real-time, providing insights into your hydration levels and digestive state.
The "Rhythm" of the Session
A typical treatment lasts between 35 and 45 minutes, which is the clinical "gold standard".
Extending a session beyond 60 minutes can place undue pressure on the kidneys and circulatory system; therefore, we prioritise efficiency and safety over duration.
As the water gently fills the bowel, you may experience a "bizarre" sensation or slight cramping—this is a sign that the colon is contracting to move stagnant waste toward evacuation. Because you are in a sterile, closed environment, these releases happen gracefully and without the need for strenuous effort.

A Sanctuary of Safety
The primary risks associated with colonic irrigation in the literature involve contaminated equipment or damage to the bowel wall. By utilising a Closed System with disposable, single-use clinical components and medical-grade water filtration, we eliminate these variables, ensuring your session is as safe as it is restorative.

Choosing the right system is the first step toward a comfortable restorative journey. Our closed-circuit technology ensures your privacy, dignity, and safety are never compromised.
